Digitalising German class reading

The core idea

Remember your school days, German lessons and those little — preferably yellow — study booklets? Yes? Well, how would you describe the feeling rising up inside you? “Positive” is probably not the adjective on most people’s lips.

So what happens when classic literature meets the medium of comics — and comics in turn meet a tablet? Our own brand Pudelskern® is revealed: interactive comics that offer a fast, entertaining and delightfully exaggerated way into the classics of literature. Readers can choose between the printed edition and the digital version as a mobile app for iOS or Android.

In close collaboration with the renowned KLETT publishing house in Stuttgart, we have already adapted 12 literary classics (including Schiller’s The Robbers, Schiller’s William Tell and Lessing’s Nathan the Wise) and sold more than 70,000 copies. And the series keeps on growing.

As a book

Classic meets comic

Anything but dusty: the “Klassiker trifft Comic” (Classic Meets Comic) series from Ernst KLETT Verlag. After an accessible introduction to plot and characters through a Pudelskern comic, the original texts by the great authors — supplemented with student-friendly explanations — read far more easily. An appendix with information on each author’s life and work rounds off the package.

And because the series is so successful, there are now specially adapted editions for German as a foreign language (DaF) — literary classics as comics for German learners worldwide.

The mobile app

For smartphone and tablet

Unlike conventional study aids, the Pudelskern learning apps for mobile devices (iOS or Android) offer an entertaining, quick overview of plot and characters, enriched with interactive background information on the work and its author. A quiz lets learners put their newly acquired knowledge to the test.

“How will the revolution continue?”

Encouraged by the excellent sales figures at KLETT, the success story is set to continue. Find out which titles are next at www.pudelskern.net.
