Carbon Dream$ Land
Welcome to the most absurd amusement park of the future, where oil glistens, coal glows and greenwashing is the main event: a satirical VR co-op game for up to 4 players against drones, propaganda and Donnie Dino himself.
With oil, wit and a healthy dose of madness
An amusement park full of oil slides, coal carousels and gas rollercoasters? Sounds like madness, or like a pretty good game concept. With Carbon Dream$ Land, Pixelcloud prevailed against hundreds of international submissions and was selected as the only German studio for the coveted EMIL-XR funding of the EU.
The concept relies on playful discovery, irony and environmental storytelling, wrapped in a fast-paced multiplayer experience that takes young people seriously and is still great fun.
An amusement park like a fever dream
Visually, Carbon Dream$ Land is a wild ride between VR pop culture, climate critique and comic satire. Thanks to Quill art, custom shaders and deliberate environmental storytelling, every scene feels like a walkable commentary on the climate crisis, sometimes absurd, sometimes frighteningly on point.
At the centre are the players themselves, as customisable robots fighting their way through the fossil-fuelled madness as a team. Supported by Maria, a rebellious scientist, they topple gigantic oil rigs and recycle the debris directly into improvised wind turbines.
Experience it in virtual reality
The big antagonist is Donnie Dino, a fire-breathing tyrant with a golden tie, his own TV studio and an ego as big as his carbon footprint. In his studio it rains fire, platitudes and propaganda. Whoever doesn’t play along gets burned.
After 15 months of intensive development with a team of nearly 20 creative minds, accompanied by user tests with the Skopos Institute and mentoring from Aalto University Helsinki and the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, Carbon Dream$ Land is airborne and now playable for everyone.
